COVID-19 update: We are fully aware of the risks that this continues to pose to many, however as you know the Government has now removed all restrictions. As such, we have returned to offering our training courses face to face or online, depending on which is most suitable for the teaching session/s being delivered. As always, we will continue to do our utmost to deliver any training in the best and safest way and this may mean offering an online alternative if a course cannot run. We offer courses suitable for those wishing to make a start learning British Sign Language and for BSL Teachers wanting to learn new strategies to aid them in the classroom.

Tessa Padden in BSL (supported by Stewart Bailey)
Tessa Padden, MA is a qualified Deaf Interpreter and Translator as well as a BSL Teacher trainer and an experienced teacher of BSL and Linguistics at University level. She will be supported by Stewart Bailey (Director, BSL Link for Communication) who is himself an experienced teacher of BSL.
We are delighted to be able to offer this popular course again, which due to past Covid 19 restrictions, was adapted for online learning. Online delivery allows for a larger number of participants across the UK. It will consist of 3 workshops, which total 15 hours of learning over three days. Participants are required to attend all three sessions.
The course will include aspects such as:
- The Conditional Clause
- BSL Semantics
- Simultaneous Signs
- Syntactic Space
- Tenses/Time Markers
- Non-Manual Features (NMF)
- Negation
- Morphology
- Verb Classes
- Classifiers
The sessions will consist of presentations, group work, video clips and handouts.
Participants will also be expected to study independently between sessions, homework exercises will be provided for personal practise and development.
Introduction to British Sign Language
Suitable for anyone who is interested in gaining some basic skills in British Sign Language. Come and join us for these fun and practical sessions; you will learn vocabulary, fingerspelling and some simple everyday language. This is a stand-alone course but will also give you the option to progress on to further levels of BSL.
Language Support in Education for LSA/CSW/Families of Deaf Children

Suitable for anyone who is interested in gaining some basic skills in British Sign Language. Come and join us for these fun and practical sessions; you will learn vocabulary, fingerspelling and some simple everyday language. This is a stand-alone course but will also give you the option to progress on to further levels of BSL.
This workshop is suitable for Language Support Assistants (LSA), Communication Support Workers (CSW) and Families of Deaf Children to refresh develop skills to:
- Engage with d/Children of all ages
- Explain concepts to d/Deaf children
- Explore practical activities on school subjects to improve d/Deaf children’s understanding
- Put children at ease or discipline them as culturally appropriate
- Respond to children talking to us in culturally appropriate ways, e.g. facial cues, body language and verbal cues
- Raise awareness of different language dynamics among children from different backgrounds
- Learn when to introduce fingerspelling and how to help with English reading skills

2nd Language Teaching Methods for BSL Teachers

Are you an experienced BSL Teacher or just beginning your teaching career? We are offering two training days that will discuss and develop a range of second language teaching methods. Day one will focus on teaching Levels 1 and 2 and day two will progress onto teaching Levels 3 to 6.
Attendees can choose to join for just the one day but those who wish to learn about Levels 3 to 6 will need to enrol for both days due to the structure of the training.

Classroom Management for BSL Teachers

Do you find the demands of a group difficult to manage? Do you want some strategies to help you cope with the different ages, personalities, learning styles and abilities in your classroom? Do you want advice on how to deal with challenging students? If yes, then this is the course for you. Following on from the success 2nd Language Teaching Methods course, we are excited to offer this new, one day training session taught by Tessa Padden in BSL.
On the course you will learn how to:

- Plan different classroom dynamics
- Expand language functions at different levels
