We are delighted that Tessa Padden has agreed to deliver this invaluable online training session for us (2 dates available).
In this four-hour workshop Tessa will be focusing on the application of roleshift when interpreting English to BSL and will also be highlighting why roleshift is integral to both interpreting and translation. The participants will take part in practical activities as well as being equipped with some useful strategies to ensure that roleshift can be embedded into translating/interpreting practice.
This course is open to all trainees and qualified interpreters/translators (both Deaf and hearing).

Tessa Padden, MA is a qualified Deaf Interpreter and Translator as well as a BSL Teacher trainer and an experienced teacher of BSL and Linguistics at University level. She will be supported by Stewart Bailey (Director, BSL Link for Communication) who is himself an experienced teacher of BSL.
We are delighted to be able to offer this popular course again, which due to past Covid 19 restrictions, was adapted for online learning. Online delivery allows for a larger number of participants across the UK. It will consist of 3 workshops, which total 15 hours of learning over three days. Participants are required to attend all three sessions.
The course will include aspects such as:
- The Conditional Clause
- BSL Semantics
- Simultaneous Signs
- Syntactic Space
- Tenses/Time Markers
- Non-Manual Features (NMF)
- Negation
- Morphology
- Verb Classes
- Classifiers
The sessions will consist of presentations, group work, video clips and handouts.
Participants will also be expected to study independently between sessions, homework exercises will be provided for personal practise and development.

Humour is a thread which runs through virtually all human interaction- visiting your GP, formal business consultations, and almost every situation in between- yet its importance is frequently underestimated. In the workplace, humour, along with small talk and swearing, is the glue that connects and maintains relationships. From greetings at the start of a shift through to banter in a team meeting, humour fulfils a variety of functions.
This workshop will focus on how humour and other elements of relational talk are used in the workplace, and why it is important to interpret these elements alongside business talk. Using a combination of taught sessions, pair work, and group exercises, it will develop your understanding of workplace interaction and create strategies for managing workplace talk.
Signature – Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting and Translation

The training team will include a mix of Deaf and hearing Tutors / Assessors / Supervisors, all with proven skills and experience in their respective fields of work.
In addition to our INTRA6 courses delivered in West Sussex, we are now offering this course in the north-west of England, based at MANCHESTER DEAF CENTRE, Crawford House, Booth St E, Manchester M13 9GH.
MANCHESTER COURSE - Saturday16th September 2023. WEST SUSSEX COURSE - Saturday 9th December 2023.
Replacing the NVQ Diploma, this new qualification from Signature is aimed at Deaf and hearing people who are aspiring to, or are currently working in the field of Sign Language Interpreting and/or Translation. The qualification is in two parts; candidates must successfully complete Part 1 and at least one stream in Part 2 to achieve RSLI or RSLT status.
The course is delivered using a range of methods including lectures, discussions and practical exercises. It is suitable for candidates with Level 6 BSL, good English skills and a desire to work within Signed Language interpreting or translation fields.
English, BSL, Interpreting and/or Translation skills will be assessed before entry onto the course.
MANCHESTER: Commences 6th October 2023 and will complete in May 2024.
WEST SUSSEX: Commences 27th January and will complete in July 2024.
We will also be offering a Part 2 course starting early/mid 2024 to include students currently enrolled on the INTRA6 Part 1. This is also open to candidates who have successfully completed Part 1 or have equivalent studies that can be confirmed as 'approved prior learning' (APL). Please note that a skills assessment will be required for entry onto this course.
Part 1 - Theories and Principles of Interpreting and Translation
English, BSL, Interpreting and/or Translation skills will be assessed before entry onto the course.
Part 1 covers the underpinning theories and principles of interpreting and translation. It is mandatory for all candidates.
Learning outcomes:
1) Analyse and evaluate key theories and principles in interpreting and translation
2) Maintain skills and systems for interpreting and translation tasks
3) Prepare for interpreting and translation assignments
4) Plan and implement continuous professional development
Candidates must successfully complete Part 1 before moving on to Part 2.
This 16-day training programme, delivered once a month over eight weekends is designed for those wishing to study the theories, principles and strategies of BSL/English or BSL/ASL interpreting, relay interpreting and/or BSL/English translation.
As part of our Part 1 training and assessment programme, we will be offering candidates the opportunity to register with NRCPD as trainees. When candidates are ready we will put you in touch with supervisors that will be able to endorse your NRCPD application if you are working to the required level.
Part 2 – Undertake professional interpreting and translation assignments
A skills assessment is required for entry onto Part 2.
Part 2 covers the practical skills required for professional interpreting and translating and is divided into four areas of practice, called ‘Streams’. Candidates have the option to specialise in one or more Streams
Stream 1: Interpret between a spoken and a signed language (Optional)
Stream 2: Interpret between two signed languages (Optional)
Stream 3: Interpret within the same signed language (Optional)
Stream 4: Translate between a written and a signed language (Optional)
Learning outcomes for all Streams:

1) Carry out interpreting tasks as a professional interpreter
2) Work as part of a team of professional interpreters and translators
3) Use technology effectively to perform remote interpreting assignments
4) Carry out translation tasks as a professional translator
5) Evaluate performance as a professional interpreter or translator
Candidates who wish to specialise in more than one stream are required to undertake assessments in all their chosen Streams.
There will be Trainer and Assessor support throughout the programme.
This 8-day training programme, delivered once a month over four weekends, is designed for those who have completed a Part 1 Theory and Practice programme and have experience of working as an Interpreter/Translator.
The course will commence early / mid 2024, providing we have a viable number of successful applicants. Date for I&A Day, and Course Weekends TBC.
This part of the qualification will have a series of internal and external (Signature) assessments that will run throughout the programme. There will be specific assessment days for each stream.
At the end of the qualification, successful candidates will be able to:
- Demonstrate good practice in their area of professional activity
- Demonstrate their ability to carry out interpreting or translation assignments to a professional standard
- Be fully aware of the role of the professional interpreter or translator and the principles of professional practice
- Evaluate and reflect on performance
- Promote personal and professional development
Byron Campbell has over 40 years of experience working as an Interpreter in every domain. As a trainer, he has designed and delivered a wide variety of Interpreter training courses including the Level 6 NVQ qualification and Police and Court courses. He has also lectured on University training programmes and at national Interpreter conferences.
