Tessa Padden, MA is a qualified Deaf Interpreter and Translator, a BSL Teacher trainer and an experienced teacher of BSL and Linguistics at University level.
The Course is 18 hours of face to face learning over three days and will cover:
The Conditional Clause
BSL Semantics
Simultaneous Signs
Syntactic Space
Tenses/Time Markers
Non-Manual Features (NMF)
Negation
Morphology
Verb Classes
Classifiers
The sessions will consist of presentations, group work, video clips and handouts.
Participants will be expected to attend for all three days and to study independently between sessions as homework exercises will be provided for personal practise and development.
The course is ideal for anybody with a minimum of Level 3 BSL and an interest in improving their self-awareness of BSL and it's structure.
Certificates will be awarded for 18 CPD points.

Signature – Level 6 Diploma in Sign Language Interpreting and Translation (INTRA6) - Overview
Course Lead: Byron Campbell
Trainers: The training team will include a mix of Deaf and hearing Tutors, Assessors and Supervisors with skills and experience in their respective fields of work.
Venue/s: Our INTRA6 Course is delivered in two venues:
- AfD, 22 Sussex Road, Haywards Heath, West Sussex, RH16 4AE
- Manchester Deaf Centre, Crawford House, Booth St E, Manchester, M13 9GH.
Course Overview: This qualification from Signature replaces the NVQ and is aimed at Deaf and hearing people who are aspiring to, or are currently working in the field of Sign Language Interpreting and/or Translation. The qualification is in two parts and Candidates must successfully complete Part 1 and at least one stream in Part 2 to achieve RSLI or RSLT status.
Both Part 1 and Part 2 are delivered using a range of methods including face to face and online lectures, discussions and practical exercises. Candidates will need to attend an Information and Assessment sessions to assess English, BSL, Interpreting and/or Translation skills before entry onto Part 1 and Part 2.
Part 1: Haywards Heath: Commences 14th March, 2025 and will complete in October, 2025
Part 1: MANCHESTER: Commences 18th October, 2024 and will complete in April, 2025 - FULL
Part 2: Commencing early/mid 2025. Exact date to be confirmed. Open to Candidates currently undertaking the INTRA6 Part 1 and to external Candidates who have successfully completed Part 1 or have equivalent studies that can be confirmed as 'Approved Prior Learning' (APL). Please note that a Skills assessment will be required for all Candidates for entry onto this course.
Part 1 - Theories and Principles of Interpreting and Translation
This 17 day programme will be delivered over eight weekends and will focus on the theories , principles and strategies of BSL/English Interpreting, BSL/ASL Interpreting, Relay Interpreting and BSL/English Translation.

Fee: £2975.00 all inclusive. Fees can be paid in instalments.
Entry requirements: All Candidates must have Level 6 BSL, good English skills and a desire to work within Language or Interpreting fields. BSL, English, Interpreting and/or Translation skills will be assessed before entry onto the course.

Course dates: All sessions are face to face. The first session is three days, the following sessions will run over two days.

Byron has been leading this Course in collaboration with BSL Link for Communication since 2019. He has over 45 years experience as a BSL/English Interpreter and has been designing and running Interpreter Training programmes for 28 years. He will be joined by both Deaf and hearing tutors, Interpreters, Translators and Assessors, who will attend as guest tutors to ensure the Course has a rounded mix of experience and input.
Course content: Part 1 covers the underpinning theories and principles of Interpreting and Translation. It is mandatory for all Candidates to pass Part 1 before embarking on Part 2.
Learning outcomes:
1) Analyse and evaluate key theories and principles in Interpreting and Translation
2) Maintain skills and systems for Interpreting and Translation tasks
3) Prepare for Interpreting and Translation assignments
4) Plan and implement Continuous Professional Development (CPD)
Registration opportunities - Towards the end of the Part 1 Course, we will encourage Candidates to register with NRCPD as Trainees. When you are ready, we will put you in touch with Supervisors and Assessors that will be able to endorse your NRCPD application, if you are working to the required level.

Part 2 – Undertake professional interpreting and translation assignments
Entry requirements: Candidates must have successfully competed and passed Part one or have equivalent APL. A Skills assessment is also required for entry onto Part 2.

Fee: In the region of £3,300 all inclusive. Fee will be confirmed when course dates are published
Course dates: Early/mid 2025. The sessions will be run over one weekend a month. Dates to be confirmed
Course content: Part 2 covers the practical skills required for professional Interpreting and Translating and is divided into four areas of practice, called ‘Streams’. Candidates have the option to specialise in one or more Streams:
Stream 1: Interpret between a spoken and a signed language
Stream 2: Interpret between two signed languages
Stream 3: Interpret within the same signed language
Stream 4: Translate between a written and a signed language
Learning outcomes for all Streams:
1) Carry out Interpreting/Translation tasks in a professional capacity
2) Work as part of a team of professional Interpreters and Translators
3) Use technology effectively to perform remote Interpreting/Translation assignments
4) Evaluate personal performance as a professional Interpreter/Translator
Part 2 will have a series of Internal and External (Signature) assessments that will run throughout the programme. There will be specific assessment days for each stream. Candidates who wish to specialise in more than one Stream are required to undertake assessments in all their chosen Streams.
At the end of the qualification, successful Candidates will be able to:
Demonstrate good practice in their area of professional activity
Demonstrate their ability to carry out Interpreting or Translation assignments to a professional standard
Be fully aware of the role of the professional Interpreter or Translator and the principles of professional practice
Evaluate and reflect on performance
Promote personal and professional development
Course Lead: Byron Campbell has over 40 years of experience working as an Interpreter in every domain. As a trainer, he has designed and delivered a wide variety of Interpreter training courses including the Level 6 NVQ qualification and Police and Court courses. He has also lectured on University training programmes and at national Interpreter conferences.
